Amazon now mulls purchase Frankfurt-Hahn airport, says repor

AMAZON's logistics plans appeared to take another step forward after Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper reported that the Seattle-based online retailer is considering the purchase of the Frankfurt-Hahn airport, reported Seattle-based GeekWire.

But Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN) officials dismissed the discussions as "rumours" and said talks, if any, are being handled by the airport's owner, the municipality of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Amazon has declined to comment on reports about interest in the HHN sale or about it's European ambitions.

Lloyd's Loading List noted that the Hahn airport is located near Koblenz, Germany where Amazon operates a large fulfilment centre, one described as covering the same amount of space as 17 football pitches.

The Frankfurt-Hahn airport boasts an especially long runway of 12,467 feet, making it ideal for cargo flights.

Last month, Amazon confirmed that it leased 20 Boeing 767 freighters from Air Transport Services Group (ATSG), part of an effort to more efficiently deliver products to customers.

Amazon vice president Dave Clark said in a news release at the time that the company is "excited to supplement our existing delivery network with a great new provider, ATSG, by adding 20 planes to ensure air cargo capacity to support one and two-day delivery for customers."

Bloomberg reported in February that Amazon is in the midst of building a global logistics operation, one which could challenge freight carriers such as UPS and FedEx. The idea is to expand Fulfilment by Amazon, linking sellers of goods more directly with buyers around the world.
