Volvo's first self-driving truck does 7 kilometre runs in Sw
VOLVO's fully autonomous truck, first to be tested 1,320 metres underground in Sweden's Kristineberg Mine, will drive seven kilometres through tunnels in its working day.
"It is a true challenge to ensure that everything works meticulously," said Volvo chief technology officer Torbjorn Holmstrom.
"No matter what type of vehicle we develop, safety is always our primary concern and this also applies to self-driving vehicles," he said.
Using sensors, the truck continuously monitors its surroundings and avoids both fixed and moving obstacles. At the same time, an on-board transport system gathers data to optimise and coordinate the route and fuel consumption.
The mine consists of polymetallic ore containing zinc, copper, lead, gold and silver, as well as copper ore and gold ore.
The truck is part of a development project and is being tested in real-life operation for the very first time. A film can be seen at www.volvogroup.com/automation
