Gems at Delhi airport inspected automatically to stop dirty
TO put a stop to suspected money laundering, India's Finance Ministry has scrapped a manual system to make way for an electronic inspection of gems and jewellery for export via a New Delhi air cargo complex.
This, follows the comments by the Chief of Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) Najib Shah that the jewellery sector "lends itself to a generation of unaccounted wealth."
The online assessment facility for gem and jewellery exports has been set up at the MMTC complex in Jhandewalan, New Delhi, where the precious cargo had been assessed manually for over two decades.
This was because of the to "lack of a custodian", even though imports of gems and jewellery were assessed electronically at the airport's cargo complex, reports the Press Trust of India.
"With the online assessment of the precious consignments, there will be fast processing and reduction in transaction cost.
It will also bring in greater transparency as there will be no human interference while processing the export," said the commissioner for air cargo exports, SR Baruah, at Indira Gandhi International Airport.
